RSO Policy
Range Safety Officer Program, North Side Sportsmen’s Association
Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are NSSA members that have taken an approved RSO training course and are willing to monitor ranges to ensure that range safety, sign-in, and guest policies are being followed. In doing so, RSOs provide valuable services to NSSA. These persons can be identified by a round red “RSO” sticker on their access cards.
In order to maintain an effective RSO program at NSSA, the following shall apply:
- NSSA now has an RSO committee, headed by a Chairman. This Chairman is responsible for:
- Organizing and monitoring RSOs at NSSA.
- Training or arranging training for new RSO candidates.
- Along with the Range Chairmen, arranging RSO volunteers for needed events, and documenting work completed.
- Ensuring all RSOs are familiar with all NSSA range policies.
- In this effort the Chairman may be assisted by RSO committee volunteers.
- Member RSOs are responsible for:
- Monitoring that range safety, sign-in, and guest policies are being followed any time the RSO is scheduled at any range.
- Showing proof of NRA certification to obtain the RSO sticker.
- Agree to commit to 6 hours of range supervision per year, preferably on weekends.
- NRA RSO recertification is every 2 years, and costs $30 for NRA members. This cost will be reimbursed by NSSA upon providing a signed work card with a total of 12 hours over the 2 year period, plus the NRA receipt, to the Chairman.
- New RSOs may be reimbursed for their initial NRA registration of $50 by providing a signed work card, with a total of 12 hours, to the Chairman, as soon as convenient.
- RSOs assigned to monitor ranges should sign in on the Range Sign-in Sheet, as an RSO.
- NSSA members must:
- Recognize that an RSO assigned any range is in charge of the range, and must follow all instructions.
- Any conflict with an RSO’s instructions by a member must be brought first to the RSO Chairman, then to the Board of Directors.
