In keeping with NSSA’s commitment to provide opportunities for youth to explore Sportsmen activities, NSSA has made its indoor archery range and equipment available to a local scout troop so they may pursue earning an Archery Merit badge.
This relationship was conceived by fellow NSSA Members Julie Yacoviello (Scoutmaster) and Jeff Knauss(Eagle Scout and Merit Badge counselor).
Julie and Jeff approached Archery Chairmen Tom Martinelli and Art Klajnowski with the idea and a plan was quickly put into action. Tom and Art are also providing support to the Troops while they are at the club working on their merit badge.
NSSA Youth Member and JOAD Archer Connor B. Also participates in the Mars Robotics Association. Their group was recently presented with the challenge to create a robot that collects foam discs and launches them toward a target. While brainstorming design ideas, Connor had the idea that sporting clay launchers might provide inspiration and contacted with the request to get an up close look at the machines.
Ron Halli, Kevin Sheen, and Wayne Noftz explained and demonstrated the operation and mechanics of several machines in use at NSSA.
We wish Connor and his team good luck with the project!
NSSA Youth Archery will resume on Sunday, Sept 27th 2020. In order to maintain social distancing, we have divided the group into 2 sessions: 10am-12noon, and 1pm-3pm. CDC guidelines will be followed; All equipment will be sanitized in between sessions and masks will be required at all times except while on the firing line.
When archers are on the firing line, masks may be removed as it is a potential safety issue and interferes with proper anchoring. Archers on the firing line will be positioned at every other target to ensure they are a safe distance from one another.
Limited spots are available in the 1pm-3pm session only. If interested, email youtharchery@northsidesportsmen.com

NSSA will resume its youth air rifle program beginning 10/31/2020
The main focus of the program is to have fun while instructing firearms safety and developing air-rifle shooting skills in the Winchester/NRA Air–Rifle Qualification Course.
This Program will be run by NRA accreditedinstructors and volunteers. All Safetty Equipment, Rifles, and Ammo, is provided by NSSA.
Several months ago, respected member Jeff Knauss proposed an Air Rifle program to the NSSA board which was approved with great interest. Jeff is an experienced NRA instructor who runs a very successful program at Allegheny Country Rifle Club. He is passionate about bringing opportunities of our sport to youth, and saw a great potential to expand the opportunity here at NSSA.
A great deal of work has taken place since then to make this program a reality. To name a few things, Jeff worked tirelessly to find volunteers who would help run the program, schedule the dates with the Indoor Archery Chairman, obtain the necessary equipment, and coordinate securing of additional funding from the NRA and 4H. Prior to the unfortunate health safety concerns, NSSA held 4 air rifle sessions with great success! The NSSA executive team applauds the board and membership for its support. We hope to resume this program as soon as possible and continue to promote and grow the opportunity for our youth!
