CMP Clinic for New Participants
The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is a U.S. government-chartered program that promotes firearm safety training and rifle practice for all qualified U.S. citizens. The CMP operates through a network of affiliated shooting clubs and state associations that cover every state in the U.S. The clubs and associations offer the opportunity for continued firearm practice and competition. Any U.S. citizen who is not legally prohibited from owning a firearm may participate.
The Northside Sportsman’s Association (NSSA) is hosting a CMP informational clinic on April 12, 2016 at 7:00 pm to present an overview of CMP/NRA match procedures and best-practices, discuss this year’s match events and answer questions.
This year’s match events include:
- NRA Rifle Matches
- Springfield/Vintage Rifle Match
- Carbine Match
- Garand Match
- .22 Caliber Match
- F-Class High Power Rifle Matches
Although a basic understanding of firearms and firearm safety is a prerequisite to participating in a match, you don’t even have to own your own rifle. NSSA has two AR-15 rifles to loan to participants, which can be used at the seven NRA Rifle Matches in 2016.
At the meeting, you will be able to ask questions and learn more about the CMP, CMP events, and procedures used during the events (match procedures, qualifying firearms, range commands, etc.). You will also be able to learn about some exciting new provisions for 2016 that allow for a greater number of rifles and participants.
Come to the CMP informational meeting on April 12 to find out more on how to get involved and participate in CMP activities!

Deer Season Range Closures and Member Meeting Schedule change
In observance of the first week of Deer Season please be aware of the following.
ALL Ranges will be CLOSED from dawn to dusk Nov 30th – Dec 5th.
The December General Membership Meeting is rescheduled to Dec 8
2nd Annual Battle of the Bulge Shoot
On Sunday, December 13th Northside Sportsman’s Club will hold the 2nd Annual Battle of the Bulge shoot. It will be the 71st anniversary of the battle that took place from December 16, 1944 through January 25, 1945.
250,000 German troops, including three full German Panzer divisions, were massed along the Belgian border. It was Germany’s last large-scale offensive and a great gamble to try to turn the tide of war. Soldiers on both sides would suffer some of the harshest winter conditions and experience some of the most brutal fighting of the Second World War.
For an excellent history of the battle, see http://tinyurl.com/Ardennenoffensive
Preferred rifles include the Karabiner 98 Kurtz for the German side (although the Springfield M1903 may be substituted), and the M1 Garand or M1 Carbine for the US side. All rifles must have open sights.
Other period-correct rifle types may be appropriate. Please ask.
Place: Rifle range at NSSA, 325 Mt Pleasant Road, Warrendale, PA. Open to the public.
Cost: $10
Nov 2015 Rifle Sight-in Days
NSSA’s Rifle Committee will once again hold sight-ins days this year for hunting rifles on November 21 and 22, and also Nov 28 and 29, from 8 am til 4 pm each day. These dates are the Saturday and Sunday before and after Thanksgiving.
This event is subject to cancellation depending on the weather conditions. We will only cancel any day that the temperature does not rise above 25 F. or for all day rain. If we cancel, the range will be open for regular shooting.
Come on out and get you deer rifle ready for the season, and enjoy swapping stories with other hunters.
Rifle/Pistol CLOSED for maintenance 9/19
Both Rifle and Pistol ranges will be closed on 9/19 8AM – 10AM to cut the grass, install and paint horizontal wood slats and replace the snow fence used for hanging targets.
Golf Cart Training at the Rifle Range
Since the rifle range will be shut down all day Saturday Sept 12, 2015, for the annual NSSA family picnic, there will be training sessions all morning at the rifle range on the use of the golf cart.
Starting time is 8 AM and will continue until about noon. Anyone who wants the training and has not taken it is welcome. I believe I can train perhaps 30 to 40 members on a first come first serve basis. You must bring your access card so it can be updated to provide access as well as for proof of membership.
See you Saturday Sept 12.
Thanks,
Stan Hoover, Rifle Range Chairman
CMP National High-Power Rifle match pics
Ten members participated in this week’s NRA High-Powered Rifle Match. Below are a few photos of the event. Our next event will be an F-Class match on September 13th. We hope to see you there.
Off-hand slow fire at 200 yards…
The term “Off-hand” is often misunderstood as shooting with the weak hand. It actually means shooting while standing with the firearm supported only with the hands.
Sitting rapid-fire at 200 yards. 60 seconds to fire 10 rounds, with a magazine change after the first 2 rounds. (The magazines are loaded 2 rounds and 8 rounds.) It’s a challenge to get off all ten rounds in 60 seconds and still display excellent marksmanship…
Prone rapid-fire at 300 yards. This is what separates the men from the boys and the women from the girls. The rifle is hand-held (no mechanical rests) and uses open sights (no scopes). And this is over a distance of three football fields The people who can do the proficiently are among the best rifle marksmen around. We’re very fortunate that our NSSA membership includes several of them, as evidenced by the results of the 2015 Camp Perry CMP matches last month.
High Power Rifle Match Sunday Aug 16
This coming Sunday Northside will hold our monthly NRA High Power Rifle Match, with open sights at 200 yards and 300 yards.
The course of fire is 8 rounds of sighters and 50 rounds for score, for a total of 58 rounds for the day. Sign up is at 8:30 and the match starts at 9:00.
As always this event is open to the public. Also, If you don’t own a qualifying rifle, NSSA has two Bushmaster XM-15 E2S A2 with 20” barrels available for match use, for free. The club also has magazines, slings, empty-chamber indicators, and a ground mat that can be used during the matches. This is an excellent way to give the sport a try for just the cost of ammunition. (Note: Only factory ammunition can be used with the club rifles—no reloads.)
I hope you can join us on Sunday.
Regards,
–Glen Beattie
CMP Chairman
